28 October 2013 UEFA has revealed that clubs participating in its competitions saw their revenue growth outpace wage growth for the first time last year since UEFA collected and analysed financial data since 2006.
Champions League, Europa League and Super Cup participants’ revenue growth for 2012 stood at 6.9 per cent with wage growth at 6.5 per cent, compared to 2011’s revenue growth of 3.2 per cent and wage growth of 5.2 per cent.
This aided over a €600-million decrease in European clubs’ losses in 2012, which was €1.066 billion compared to 2011’s €1.670 billion loss. Revenues for participating clubs have also reached more than €1.25 billion per year for the 2012/13 to 2014/15 seasons, which has seen a 12 per cent average growth every year over the last decade.
Champions League clubs will receive €967 million (75 per cent) of UEFA’s revenues from 2013-15, compared to €238 million (19 per cent) given to Europa League participants and €81 million (six per cent) handed to clubs that do not participate in UEFA competitions.
UEFA also revealed that last year, European clubs spent €5 billion (60 per cent) of revenue on personnel costs, with 79 per cent of this spent on players.{jcomments on}
