Real Madrid and Barcelona are reportedly close to agreeing a groundbreaking deal with the Spanish
professional league, the LFP, that would see revenue would be distributed more evenly.
LFP president Jose
Luis Astiazaran said: “We had a meeting and a proposal was made to share income according to
percentages linked to audience share, a fixed percentage and (further percentages) that fluctuate according
to historical results.” Any change would probably start after 2015 as most clubs have existing TV deals that
ran until 2013 or 2014. At present, Real and Barca get around half of the €600 million pot of money from TV
broadcasting. Spain’s clubs collectively owe around €3.5 billion and smaller, poorer sides have been
pressing for collective negotiation to be introduced. At present, the two giants of Spanish game earn almost
19 times more from TV deals than the smallest clubs in the top division - the biggest gap among European
leagues.{jcomments on}
