Manchester United considers floating shares in Asia

BBC-17 August 2011

The English soccer club Manchester United is considering selling shares in Asia, possibly at the stock exchange in Singapore.

A share offer would raise new investment for the team, as well as give its supporters in Asia a chance to buy a stake in the club.

Ben Heyhoe Flint, the head of Asia Pacific for the marketing company Fuse, told the BBC that supporters in Asia make up two thirds of Manchester United's global fan base.

THE GLAZERS could be ready to float Manchester United on the Hong Kong stock exchange in a shock move that might earn them as much as £1.7 billion.

It is reported that floating the club is the only way the Glazers, who have proved unpopular with supporters, will leave Manchester United.

After rebuffing interest from the Qatari royal family last year, they have maintained that they will not sell to a private investor.

The family have been in talks with investment banks about a possible float in Hong Kong, which could prove far more lucrative than doing it in London.

It is claimed that if shares in Italian fashion label Prada do well when listed there today the Glazers are more likely to follow suit.

United would be attractive to potential shareholders, with an operating profit of £91m and annual revenue of £286m in last year’s accounts. But the Glazers’ debt repayments meant that the club still lost £79m.

The Glazers have faced hostility in the six seasons since their takeover, with fans furious that they borrowed against the club to fund their purchase.

Skipper Nemanja Vidic, meanwhile, will be staying at Old Trafford despite reports linking him to Juventus, according to his agent.

Silvano Martina said: “ I talked to him about a hypothetical transfer and he replied, ‘I’m the captain of Manchester United, earning well, I’ve won almost everything… Why should I go when Italian football is going through a turbulent period?’ This removes any doubt. He stays.” {jcomments on}
